Best Practices
Getting Started Right
Before your packaging hits the press, your digital files need to be set up for success. Following a few key guidelines helps ensure accuracy, efficiency, and beautiful results every time. Here, you’ll find tips and checklists for getting your artwork print-ready.
Setting Up Your Files
To make the design process easier and more precise, we recommend the following setup:
Use Two Layers
Place the e-template (die line) on a dedicated top layer and your artwork on a separate bottom layer. This makes aligning artwork with cuts and folds simple — just toggle the die line on and off as needed.
Design in CMYK
Avoid RGB to ensure accurate color output.
Avoid Nested Objects
Don’t embed EPS files inside other Illustrator files — this can create output issues.
Stick to TIFF or EPS
These formats work best for placed graphics.
Pre-Crop & Resize or Modify image size, rotation, and cropping before importing into your layout program for best quality.
Clean Up Color Palettes
Remove unused swatches and assign colors using official swatch books — not your monitor.
Define Spot vs. Process
Use spot colors only when you actually want them separated; otherwise, define all process colors in CMYK.
Common Issues We See
Even experienced designers run into these. Here are the most common problems that can delay production:
- Artwork doesn’t match the die line/template
- Missing or incorrect fonts
- Incorrect or missing graphic files (TIFFs/EPS)
- RGB color modes instead of CMYK
- Low-resolution images
- Bleeds not included
- Compressed or stylized type with no font file
- Incorrect use of spot vs. process colors
- Hairlines or borders that are too thin
- Duplicate spot colors or visual compression artifacts
Digital Proof / PDF Checklist
Our digital proof is the last stop before we go to press. Treat it like your packaging’s final exam. Here’s what to look for:
- Proofread every word (twice).
- Have someone else review it, too.
- Verify type flow, layout alignment, and color breaks.
- Ensure all graphics are sharp — not pixelated.
- Check for missing fonts or font substitution.
- Review image placement, size, and cropping.
- Double-check all addresses, phone numbers, and dates.
- Mark corrections clearly using bold colors or annotations.
- Include clear, written instructions for any edits.
- Indicate special printing notes like varnish areas or color sensitivity.
- Return the signed approval form or PDF waiver to us to begin production.
